World Highest Ultra Marathon

Worlds highest marathon from the base of Mt. Everest South Col. Starting the event right from Khumbu glaciers beneath tumbling Ice falls. Exploring interesting Buddhist monastery including Sherpa culture, an amazing run in the shade of world’s highest peaks, from remorseless ice fields to alpine forested and traditional villages.

World Highest Ultra Marathon

Arrive Kathmandu by May 15th or before for Ultra marathon as the trips is ahead from the main normal marathon and flight to Lukla on 16th May and back at Kathmandu on 2nd June with 04th final departure homeward bound and end of our services for extension in Nepal please let us know.

Introduction:

An experience of a lifetime adventures with classic event THEM (Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon) as this is not a normal run or usual country marathon.

This is combination of culture and scenic walk towards Gokyo and in the world highest mountain base camp, where this extreme Ultra Marathon run begins while others do the normal 42 k.m.

But for Ultra marathon adding extra mileage covering a distance of approx 60 k.m. running in the shade of world highest peaks including Mt. Everest the first half on the main trail and the leaving the busy normal route heading higher near to Gokyo and Cho-la base at Na and back to Namche Bazaar to conclude this most overwhelming run in the history of marathon event.

Before the main event trek begins with a sweeping scenic flight to Lukla, after Lukla walk follows farm villages with wonderful views of the high snowcapped peaks all the way to the highest spot at Kalapatthar, offering outstanding panorama of peaks and glacier with Mt. Everest at close distance.

The only trek (beside mountaineering expeditions) with overnight camping at the base of towering Mt. Everest close to Khumbu notorious Ice Fall, journey ends at Lukla with the scenic flight back to Kathmandu.

A great pleasure taking part in Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon event May 29th every year, this marathon organized to commemorate anniversary “ascent of Mt. Everest” by Late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary.

The legendary Tenzing and Hillary associated with Mt. Everest marathon will be a most befitting tribute to these great souls who climbed Everest for the first time in the history of human civilization. The start line is from Everest Base camp 5356m (17,149 feet).

The finish is at the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar at 3446m (11,300 feet) and the course is a measured 60 km (37. 28 miles) over rough mountain trails.

Tenzing Hillary Everest Ultra Marathon a unique in many ways and has many special features:

Highest Marathon in the world-Starting line is 5356m. Recorded in the Guinness of Book of Records as Highest Marathon of the World begins from Expedition Base Camp right below the Khumbu Icefall-at the backdrop of Everest, Lhotse and Lola Pass. The Marathon runs through the Everest Expedition Base Camp crisscrossing village trails to Namche Bazaar covering the distance 60 kms fulfilling the Olympic Standard. The Marathon runs through the Highest Glaciers and Moraines around the stretch of 10 kms.

This Ultra marathon passes through the traditional route to Everest pioneered by Late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary while climbing Everest in 1953.

It passes through the highest elevation in the world through monasteries, monuments, chortens, suspension bridges and all sorts of beautiful landscape which are nowhere in the world. It also passes through world renowned Tengboche monastery, meandering through the rhododendron forest, wild orchid grove and most scenic landscape in the world inhabited by famous Sherpa climbers.

We are organizing this Marathon to convey the message to the whole world that Nepal is always the happening place for International Event.

We are trying to grab the attention of the International as well as Domestic Tourist carrying the message that Nepal is still a safe and friendly place for adventure sports.

Our main purpose is to promote Nepal as one of the renowned Adventure Sports Tourism Destination.

 

Itinerary

On arrival at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport you will be received by our staff and transfer you to Hotel, where our guide will brief regarding Hotel, Kathmandu, Trekking, do’s and don’ts and other related information that you might require while in Nepal.

On first day, informed on arrival about the time for your guided sightseeing tour in Kathmandu at places of interest.

Approx: 30 minutes flight to Lukla 2,800m – 08 km (03hrs walk) to Phakding at 2,652m. Early morning you will be transferred to domestic Airport, after necessary security formalities a panoramic flight to Lukla, on arrival received by our trekking guides.

In Lukla time to wander around, while Sherpa crew sort and divide the load, lunch depending upon the time of arrival at Lukla either in Lukla or few walks further down on route to Phakding.

The walk is gradual most of the way, with few ups and view of Kusum-Kangru 6,369m crossing suspension bridge, a short climb brings at Ghat village, with another hour walk brings you at Phakding village for overnight stop by the bank of Dudh-Kosi River.

From Phakding crossing bridge over Dudh-Kosi, walk is pleasant with few short uphill and downhill, re-crossing the same river again with magnificent view of Thermasharkhu 6,608m to reach at Monjo near the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park.

From here a short descend to Jorsalle village the last village till Namche Bazaar, walk is pleasant on the river bed to the last bridge over Imjatse river, from here climb uphill to Namche Bazaar with magnificent view of Kwangde peak, Kusum kangru, Mt. Everest- Nuptse, Lhotse and of Taweche peak, on reaching famous Namche Bazaar, traditional houses of Sherpa architectures.

Suggested activities a short walk uphill to Sagarmatha National Park Headquarter, a magnificent spot on top of Namche Bazaar with breathtaking view of surrounding snowcapped peaks, visit the museum with full information with history of the Himalayas, geographic, culture, mountaineering including flora and fauna of the region with afternoon at leisure.

From Namche after rest day, morning a steep climb to Syangboche with a short airstrip seldom used for smaller Pilatus Porter aircraft, near the end of the airstrip stands the Everest View Hotel, the first luxury hotel around Khumbu.

After a climb to Syangboche a gentle uphill for an hour passing government run Yak breeding farm and the slowly walk brings at a glacial valley reaching at Khunde village (home in Nepal of late Sir Edmund Hillary) here with time visit the Khunde Hospital built by Edmund Hillary Trust and Foundation the area offers incredible views of snow capped peaks with majestic Amadablam and Everest towards North. From here a slow downhill walk to Khumjung village for overnight stop, afternoon visit the old Khumjung monastery the only place where a scalp of Yeti is kept in a glass box.

After a wonderful stop at Khumjung walk downhill where the Gokyo route diverts from the main trail towards north.

Then with steep towards a large Chorten at Mong 3,973 meters, from here path meanders in a series of switchbacks down a sandy slope to the Dudh Kosi at Phortse Thanghka.

After Phortse, continue trek to Dole with a gradual climb out of the valley through a patch of rhododendron forest which gives way to juniper and conifers trees.

Walk passes many Yaks summer pastures as the trek winds through Tongba village at 3,950m and Gyele 3,960m and finally arriving at Dole with super view of Khumbila and Tawache 6,542m.

From Dole, our route climbs steadily along the side of the valley, rhododendron forest giving way to scrub juniper as altitude gains gradually. The trail climbs on a fairly level path for an hour to Lhabarma Kharka at 4,325 m and a further an hour to Luza at 4,390m; eventually skirting around a ridge to gain the first views of Machherma village, spread out in the valley below. Descend to overnight stop at Machherma.

Afternoon explore above the village for view encompassing Cho Oyo 8,210m and all the mountains that flank the Ngozumba Glacier.

Retrace the journey back to Dole and Phortse Tenga near Dudh Kosi river, after crossing the bridge an hour climb to reach at quaint village of Phortse where trekkers seldom visit this route and the village, afternoon explore this sleepy villages which is quiet interesting.

After a wonderful time at Phortse and Machherma, walk leads on the winding uphill above the Imjatse River all the way to upper Pangboche village at 4,000m, from here a short climb to Shomare for lunch a small settlement with close-up view of Ama-Dablam.

After a pleasant stop, continue walk heading east to reach a small bridge beneath towering north face of Ama Dablam. From the bridge climbing slowly on the winding path as you enter Imja tse Valley, beneath the peaks of soaring Ama-Dablam, Nuptse and Lhotse, with views of Island peak or Imja tse at 6,189m, a popular peak amongst all trekking peaks in Nepal.

Dingboche, a beautiful village patchwork of field with enclosed stone walls protecting the crops barley, buckwheat, potatoes from the wind and animals.

Dingboche with many teahouses and fine lodge located on route Chukung and Island peak base camp.

A leisure day for short hike around Dingboche, one can hike to Chukung at 4,730m taking almost 3 hours, Chukung with few lodge and teahouses offering super view of peaks and glaciers of Lhotse, Ama-Dablam.

From Dingboche with up for an hour to a ridge with Mani and Stupa, from here on the gentle path with slow climb with view of Tawache, Ama-Dablam, Pokalde, Kongmatse and Nuptse, after a pleasant walk of few hours trail joins coming from Pheriche at Thugla, located near the bridge over torrent river where Khumbu glaciers melts into raging river.

From Thugla, an hour steep up to the top of Thugla Ridge / pass with lots of memorial of unfortunate climbers, died in expeditions around mountains of Khumbu region, after a short rest another hour of good walk brings at Lobuche.

Lobuche situated in a corner with about 6-8 nice lodges and Teahouses.

The first hour walk with gradual up over the valley following a rocky moraine path, on the walk with ice-glacial pond, iceberg of Khumbu glacier beneath the trail.

After a last rocky moraine dunes, a short descend to Gorakshep located on a flat field below Kalapatthar 5,545m and Mt.Pumori 7,145m.

Gorakshep with few lodges, a junction towards Everest / Lhotse / Pumori Base Camp and walk to Kalapathar, and this place was earlier base camp of Mt. Everest expeditions till 1970’s.

Afternoon climb to Kalapatthar, on reaching at the top of Kalapatthar, which is a small rocky spot south-west from Mt. Pumori, the view from here is beyond imagination as Everest stands within a stone throw distance, between the summit of Nuptse and Lho-la and Lhotse, includes view of Everest Base camp way down below on moraine of Khumbu glacier.

After a wonderful time descend to Gorakshep for overnight with afternoon free for medical checkup or for practice the run.

Today heading towards our final destination of this adventure at the foot of Mt. Everest close to notorious Khumbu tumbling Ice-fall, as the walk meander on moraine, each year trail changes due to movements of glacier, the walk is quite strenuous due to high altitude and thin air.

Walk passes through over rocky dunes and moraine and icy streams, till base camp is reached for lunch and overnight stop.

At Everest Base Camp during high expedition season full of activities with many camps of different nationalities on expeditions to Mt. Everest / Lhotse.

A great spot to spend the day within world’s highest mountains in the night time listen the crackling of glacier and the thundering sound of avalanches sometimes, today a practice or a mock race for a short distance.

Afternoon time great numbers of runners’ mainly Nepali participant join up here for next day great event.

Early breakfast around 5:30 a.m. assemble at 6:30 a.m. with final briefing of the route, event starts at 7 a.m. sharp.

The run leads back to Gorakshep-Lobuche and to Thugla where Dingboche trails branches off, from here our route climbs on higher side leaving behind the trail to Pheriche, afternoon can be very windy here.

On reaching Dingboche leading towards east for 3 k.m. then turn around the finishing loop of 3 k.m. (a total of 6 k.m.) back to Dingboche and reaching a bridge, after the bridge downhill all the way with few ups to Pangboche above village, please look for sign for Ultra, as the Ultra route leaves behind the main Thyangboche route heading higher to Phortse and to Na near Gokyo and running downhill to Machherma-Dole-Mong ridge and on the main Everest / Namche trail to complete the run.

Our run follows on the main busy trail all the way to Namche Bazaar with downhill and level path. On reaching Namche Bazaar at the finishing point and end of this great run.

Here presentation of medals and certificates with overnight in a nice Lodge at Namche Bazaar.

Note: As the main route to Everest Base Camp from Namche Bazaar is only about 36 k.m. where’s the international standard for marathon is 42 k.m. so, a loop of 3 + 3 k.m further away from Dingboche is added to make it little more than 42 k.m. to keep the world standard record.

After hard time of previous day, a slow morning with breakfast at 7 or 8 a.m. Morning free till lunch then retracing the walk to Monjo or to Chumoa for overnight near Sagarmatha National Park gate.

Last day of this great adventure with leisure walk, enjoying the scenery a
climb for short while to reach at Lukla, at Lukla last day dinner celebrate with fellow Sherpa crew, porters and team members.

The flight time to Kathmandu schedule morning normally, sometime the flight can be delayed due to bad weather and other factor beyond our control. Depending upon the flight time taking about 30 minutes to reach Kathmandu, a panoramic view of the snow capped peaks during airborne, at Kathmandu domestic terminal transfer back to respective Hotels.

A free day in Kathmandu for individual activities and shopping for interested people can book for short tour in and around Kathmandu Valley.

Today as per your international flight time, keep your confirmed air ticket, and your passport handy. Our staff transfers you to airport for your final departure from this amazing country, Nepal.
