Nar & Phu Upper Manang

An exclusive destination around Nar & Phu Upper Manang valley trekking, which was opened decade ago for visitors, this area is getting popular among trekkers at present.

Nar & Phu Upper Manang a picturesque adventure includes crossing of two high passes of Kang-la and Thorang- la, trekking starts on the popular Annapurna Circuit trail on world top ten destinations with awesome views of high snowcapped peaks and impressive Buddhist culture of Upper and lower Manang valley.

This trip begins with an interesting drive from Kathmandu to Lamjung area at Beshishar and Jagat village, and then heading higher towards alpine climate country with beautiful forest of rhododendron, pines and fir trees and into dry windswept country of old Tibetan Buddhists culture and ancient Bon tradition where elusive snow leopard and Blue Sheep are found in this high country of Nar& Phu, exploring traditional villages with awesome views of Annapurna and Damodar Himal.

Then heading to cross high Kang-la to reach the main Annapurna circuit route in Manang villagers, here explore the villages and monasteries, then heading towards the highest point of this adventure over Thorang-la pass at 5,416 m / 17,700 ft with mind blowing views of mountains.

Return journey leading past holy Muktinath at Mustang area to Jomsom town for a scenic flight to picturesque Pokhara where the Annapurna Mountain reflects on its pristine lakes of Phewa and Begnas.


On arrival in Kathmandu received by our staff and representative for a short drive to respective hotels in Kathmandu city, after refreshment our guide will brief regarding Nar & Phu Upper Manang trekking, hotels, lodge and necessary information required while you are with us in Nepal with welcome dinner.

Morning depart for interesting guided tour of Kathmandu city with world heritage sites. Kathmandu city and the valley steeped in history and culture, after an impressive time with lunch around restaurant in the city area, back to hotel with afternoon free preparation for Nar & Phu Upper Manang Trekking.

Starting this wonderful Annapurna circuit with an interesting long drive towards north mid west from Kathmandu, leading past Beshishar town (headquarter of Lamjung district).

From here transfer to another vehicle for the rough and exciting drive on dirt trail passing Khudi, Bhulbhule and Ngadi following Marsyangdi River upstream, and then leaving the river with a climb to reach at Jagat village for overnight stop in a nice lodge, Jagat a small farm village with few good lodges for trekkers.

From Jagat where our trek begins, starting on winding path to Chamje, and to raging Marsyangdi River, and into forested area with super views of Annapurna and Manaslu range, walk continues reaching at Tal village located on a nice valley, after Tal another 2 hours walk to Dharapani village for overnight stop.

Dharapani a nice village with Buddhist culture, situated on the junction of Annapurna circuit and Manaslu trekking trail.

Start the morning walk into cool rhododendron and pine forest passing villages of Bagachap and Danque, then to Timang village from here onwards into more Buddhist area, with super view of Mt. Manaslu 8,163m / 26,781ft, from this village few hours trek leads to Koto village for overnight stop, just close distance from Chame town headquarter of Manang district. From Koto where the trek to Nar & Phu starts on leaving the main Annapurna circuit trail.

After Koto our route heads north away from Annapurna circuit trail for a week heading towards Nar & Phu villages, in the hidden areas of Upper Manang valley near South West Tibet border in the country of blue sheep’s and snow leopards.

Trek leads into narrow valley with forest of pines and rhododendron trees, then reaching nice pasture fields with huts and sheds of Yak herders and in the gorge formed by Pisang Peak and Kang-guru Himal lower basin, walk continues following Nar-Phu River upstream to reach at Dharmashala for overnight stop.

Morning walk leads towards far north towards Phu village isolated area of dry, arid landscapes, on the lookout for some wildlife’s Blue Sheep’s, Snow Leopard, Musk deer’s and mountain goats.

Walk continues to Kyang for overnight stop after an interesting day, Kyang with dozen houses of Tibetan culture.

Today destination to Phu village morning walk towards Phu River following upstream for some time and then descending back to river again, then climb to reach a gorge valley, walking around gorge for some time and up into a wide glacial valley with pasture lands ending at Phu village of strong Tibetan influence culture, traditions and religion.

A necessary rest day at Phu for acclimatization, explore this impressive village visit Tashilkhang and Samdu Choling Monastery and Kyauchyu waterfalls, Phu Village with about 30 houses for 100 to 150 inhabitants.

From Phu village walk leads back on the same trail for few hours descending to a narrow gorge at Phu khola, from here a slow climb to reach at Yughat small village with mani, chortens and Buddhist shrines, then finally reaching on a flat field at Nar Phedi for overnight stop.

Morning walk leads back to Phu Khola for few hours to reach a suspension bridge over Phu Khola, crossing the bridge with steep climb for few hours reaching a flat area then walk to Nar village for overnight.

Nargaon in comparison with Phu looks similar but smaller due to its remoteness with high altitude and dry land.

After Nar-Gaon walk heads to remote wilderness, away from human settlement for few days, an interesting walk for few hours then with short ups and downs in some rocky and arid path, passing cattle herders shelters and grazing field heading further west following Temdenzon khola in this wild surrounding with views of snow peaks and finally reaching at Kang la pass base for overnight camp at 4,530 meters altitude.

Starting early morning to cross Kang-la at an altitude of 5,322 meters, walk climbs higher on a steep slope for few hours with stunning views of Pisang Peak with Chulu Far East Peak, and then reaching the top of the pass with wonderful views of Annapurna massif mountain range, Chulu Peaks, Lamjung Himal and adjoining peaks of Annapurna range.

From downhill to Ngawal via Julu village close to Manang and main Annapurna circuit trail.

After North East Manang at Nar& Phu where Kangla pass separates the two Manang high valleys.

Morning walk is pleasant with downhill to Humde village with a small airstrip, from here reach Braga village and visit the monastery with ancient artifacts and statue of various Buddha with mind blowing panorama of snow capped mountains.

After a wonderful time exploring the monastery, an hour walk leads to proper Manang village for overnight.

After Manang, morning walk leads uphill to Yak Kharka, an interesting high altitude trekking with super views of snowcapped mountains, then crossing a small stream river to reach Yak Kharka, a small settlement with tremendous views of Gangapurna, Annapurna III and Chulu Peaks.

From here a climb along the river bank to Thorung Phedi, and then an hour with steep climb brings at Thorang High Camp for overnight stop.

Starting early morning after breakfast a long climb up to Thorang-la with steep haul to reach at 5,416 m / 17,700 ft on top of Thorang-la festooned with Buddhist prayer flags.

Highest point of the adventure certainly requires high spirit and strong mind to reach this high point.

The top offers superb vista landscapes and snowcapped peaks, from here a long descend to Muktinath at 3,800 m.

Muktinath a holy place for both Hindu and Buddhist the word Muktinath literally means ‘the place for Nirvana or Liberation’.

After Muktinath, rest of the journey is easier with moderate walks all the way with a big drop of 1,200m downhill to Kaligandaki river valley, this pleasant walk leads to Kaligandaki river valley, from here walk to Jomsom, headquarter town of Mustang area with a small airstrip above Kaligandaki River. Jomsom an interesting town famous for delicious apples and its products with paved streets and well kept lodges. At Jomsom celebrate last night dinner with fellow trekking crews and guide.

Early breakfast and transfer to Jomsom airport for short flight of 25 minutes to Pokhara, during airborne fantastic views of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiris and Annapurna range of mountains with rolling hills with farm villages.

On reaching Pokhara airport transfer to respective hotels by the serene lake Phewa, afternoon free for individual activities or just relax and enjoy the views of the Annapurna Himalaya.

Pokhara, a popular touristic city, where the peaks of Annapurna Mountain range reflects on its beautiful serene lakes of Phewa and Begnas.

Morning after breakfast drive back to Kathmandu on the interesting and exciting highway through many farms, villages and towns and then drive leads to uphill to reaching Kathmandu valley.

On reaching hotel, afternoon free with farewell dinner in a typical Nepalese restaurant with culture / folk dance program to entertain with authentic Nepali meals.
