A unique Annapurna Circuit Cross Country Marathon Run some called as “Yak Attack” although this run is not officially organized due to some logistic and technical problems.
However this Cross Country can be privately organized with proper field staff and booking designated hotel and lodge before- hand.
A strong team of field staff and medical team required for this cross high country marathon this run is organized every year called as Yak Attack by UK organizers, this starts from Kathmandu to Pokhara.
Our Cross Country starts from Besishar on the low and warm areas of Lamjung district and the heading high alpine hills into cooler area eventually to arctic terrain of high Manang valley and to Thorang – la 5,416 m high pass.
Before heading towards higher country with short running day and with rest day at Manang to revive the strength back before heading higher country for few days.
After Thorang-la with steady and good run downhill towards Beni back into warmer area through charming villages of Jomsom-Marpha and Ghasa at Tatopani “hot spring” and ending the run at Beni town headquarter of Myagdi district.
Starting this wonderful Annapurna circuit Marathon Cross Country run with long drive towards north mid west from Kathmandu, leading to Beshishar town (headquarter of Lamjung district).
From here transfer to another vehicle for the rough and exciting drive on dirt trail passing Khudi, Bhulbhule and Ngadi following Marsyangdi River upstream, and then leaving the river with a climb to reach at Jagat village for overnight stop in a nice lodge, Jagat a small farm village with few good lodges for trekkers.
From Besiar start the run early morning by 6:30 a.m. due to warm day run to Jagat starting on winding path to Chamje, and to raging Marsyangdi River, and into forested area with super views of Annapurna and Manaslu range, continues reaching Tal village located on a nice valley, after Tal to Dharapani village for overnight stop.
Dharapani a nice village with Buddhist culture, situated on the junction of Annapurna circuit and Manaslu trekking trail.
Start morning run into cool rhododendron and pine forest passing villages of Bagachap and Danque, then to Timang village from here onwards into more Buddhist area, with super view of Mt. Manaslu 8,163m / 26,781ft, passing large town at Chame, a major town and headquarter of Manang district.
From here air gets cooler as the run leads closer into mountains through beautiful forest of rhododendron and pine trees, following Marshyangdi River upstream to Bratang village.
From this village an uphill into pine trees to Dhukure Pokhari a small place with few lodge and views of Chulu and Pisang peak, and then downhill to Pisang village for overnight stop.
Pisang village located within Manang valley with stunning mountains views as altitude gains for here onwards so we have the run shorter here to Manang main village.
Run into forest with short uphill views of Annapurna II and III, Gangapurna Chulu and Pisang peak, then reaching Hongde village with a small air strip, from here tree lines fades to barren, arid landscapes.
Following a wide trail to Braga village and then end the run at Manang village rest of the afternoon relax and marvel the view of mountain.
An important rest day for acclimatization before heading high altitude and up to Thorang -la, a short hike explore Manang village beneath towering Annapurna and Gangapurna peaks, a nice short hike up for views of Gangapurna Glacier and the Manang glacial Lake.
After a good rest at Manang, run towards Yak Kharka, an interesting high altitude run with views of mountains, crossing small streams to reach at Yak Kharka, a small settlement with incredible views of Gangapurna, Annapurna III and Chulu Peaks, after a short rest continue towards Thorang High Camp.
Run leads to Thorung Phedi for short rest and then climb the last hour uphill to Thorang High Camp for overnight stop.
Start the early morning run on this Big Day! A thrill and highlight of this great adventure, after breakfast a long climb up to Thorang-la with steep haul to reach at 5,416 m / 17,700 ft on top of Thorang-la festooned with Buddhist prayer flags.
Highest point of the adventure certainly requires high spirit and strong mind to reach this high point.
The top offers superb vista landscapes and snowcapped peaks, from here a long descend to Muktinath at 3,800 m.
Muktinath a holy place for both Hindu and Buddhist the word Muktinath literally means ‘the place for Nirvana or Liberation’.
After Muktinath, run is easier with big drop of 1,200m downhill to Kaligandaki river valley and to Jomsom headquarter town of Mustang area with a small airstrip above Kaligandaki River. Overnight at Jomsom rest and rejuvenate the strength back for next day run.
After Jomsom run to Marpha, one of the most charming village,
a gem village, with white painted houses, paved streets and well kept lodges. From Marpha onward, follow Kaligandaki river downstream with views of Tukuche peak, Dhaulagiri and Mt. Nilgiri walk to Larjung village, after few hours walk getting back into tree lines of pine, oaks and rhododendron forest and then reaching at Kalapani village, another lovely village with grand views of Mt. Annapurna I, Nilgiris and Dhaulagiri, a short downhill run reaches Ghasa for overnight stop, Ghasa village end of Mustang district.
Start run reaching warmer areas with dramatic change in vegetation and climate, as the run leads between two giant peaks of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna forming world deepest gorge.
This pleasant run leads back to paddy fields in warm sub-tropical climate to Tatopani passing beautiful waterfalls of Rupsi.
Tatopani (Hot Spring) village the valley is quite constricted and it is quite warm with sub-tropic climate and vegetation, Tatopani is another nice village with large hot spring pools just by the bank of the River Kaligandaki.
After a wonderful overnight stop at Tatopani, continue last day run on nice winding trail with gradual trail following Kali Gandaki River all the way to Beni town headquarter of Myagdi district.
After a rest and getting refreshed board in the bus for 3-4 hours drive to scenic Pokhara for overnight stop by the Lake Phewa.
Pokhara, a popular touristic city, where the peaks of Annapurna Mountain range reflects on its beautiful serene lakes of Phewa and Begnas.
Morning after breakfast drive back to Kathmandu on the interesting and exciting highway through many farms, villages and towns and then drive leads to uphill to reach Kathmandu valley.
On reaching hotel, afternoon free with farewell dinner in a typical Nepalese restaurant with culture / folk dance program to entertain with authentic Nepali meals.
